I think the fact that it is there originally is an answer in itself. Let me preempt your incredibly ignorant response: I am not saying that every single thing that was or wasn't added to the car should have been or had a net positive effect. Many things that weren't added were omitted due to cost, and many things that were added were added due to government regulations. There are of course other reasons, but the other reasons would be based on whether it has a net benefit to the overall package and not whether they are forced to or can't afford to. In the case of the splash shield, the government likely didn't play a role in adding it, and it sure as hell wouldn't have saved money to leave it off. You could make an argument for aesthetics, but it would be a weak argument that can be easily torn apart.
